Hiwin "R" Rail Information

"E" Dimension

Please consider the drawing shown right along with explanatory text below. These will clarify important concepts about Hiwin linear rail.

Rail is supplied to us in long lengths. These vary by the width size of the rail from 2000mm sticks in the 15mm rail up to 4000mm sticks in wider rail sizes. It is important to understand that we don't have random and especially exact-size lengths of rail sitting on our shelves.

When your order rail from us, we must cut the rail to your specifications. For this reason, it is also important for you to know that we cut orders as they come in. It may take a week or so to custom-cut your rail depending on our backlog. If you need faster delivery, please let us know that and we will try our best to accommodate.

You should also know that rail is HARDENED. It is difficult to cut and we have special equipment (abrasive cut-off machines that are very accurate and spray coolant on the rail as it is cut) and jigs that allow us to do this efficiently, accurately and safely. We often get the question: "Can I cut my own rail." There's no easy answer to that.

When we cut your rail, we will follow the standard protocol for determining where your rail mounting holes will be located. Understand that rail comes to us with the mounting holes already in place...we don't drill them. The standard procedure is to make the mounting holes closest to each end of your rail segment EQUAL. The measure from the end of the rail to the center of the first mounting hole is referred to as the "E" dimension. All other holes in the rail as you continue down the line will have the Hiwin standard "P" dimension. This "P" dimension varies by rail width size...refer to the chart below.

For the sake of illustration, let's say that you order a piece of 25mm LG rail from us that's to be 1000mm long. We will send you a piece of rail that measures EXACTLY 1000mm. But we won't just arbitrarily cut it...we will carefully cut it (twice) so that the "E" dimension will be the same on each end. This is especially crucial if you are building machines that you intend to duplicate or support. Using this accepted methodology creates a "standard" by which future pieces of rail are produced. Imagine the confusion if every piece of 1000mm LG25 rail you acquired had different hole placement!

PLEASE NOTE: If you are purchasing rail for replacement purposes, you should take some careful measurements on the existing rail to establish the hole pattern. We can adjust the "E" dimensions to accommodate your special requirements...but we can only do this if we know about it. Otherwise, we supply rail using the standard of EQUAL "E" MEASURE.

A final observation. Occasionally on our site we will sell REMNANTS. We will always identify and price as such. This means that the rail is a leftover piece and the "E" mounting holes do not follow a rule. Their positioning is completely arbitrary. You could buy a 300mm remnant and it will be 300mm long. But the "E" dimension on one end could be 20mm while on the other end it is 30mm. For many DIYers who are custom-building a machine and drilling mounting holes in a base, this makes no difference.
